Automated Leak Test Rig
Zaxis Controller with Automated Test Rig.
Automated Test Rig with Core shown only.
This compact benchtop device was designed and implemented to detect leaks in flow-through microfluidic cartridges used in qPCR applications. This system features a pneumatic air slide table to engage with the flow-through microfluidics to perform a pressure decay test. The engagement of the air table, pressure decay test, and data collection is controlled by a Zaxis Leak Test controller, while the mechanical rig holds the cartridge during testing.
I designed the Core subassembly in the rig, iterating through several prototypes using 3D printed and off-the-shelf components. The final Core design consists of 4 CNC machined parts made from aluminum 6061-T6, with selection of the proper size for the air slide table, tubing, fittings, and flow control valves to safely operate at various pressures while maintaining function.
Additional tasks I performed include programming the Zaxis controller to specify test duration, air slide actuation sequencing, and tuning flow controls with proper parameters to ensure smooth operation.
As a result of this device, leaks could be detected on the assembly line within 10 seconds, improving the assembly speed and quality of products to end users.
Prototype #1: 3D printed + off-the-shelf parts.
BOM list for final Core design, combining both off the shelf components and custom designed aluminum parts.
Prototype #2: Reduced off-the-shelf parts with single body 3D printed parts.
Final Design: Fully machined aluminum components.
